The Story of SaugaTech
SaugaTech wasn't started in a boardroom, and it wasn't created by a marketing agency. It started with a simple question asked by a remote worker looking for community in his own backyard.
The Reddit Spark
In early 2025, Mississauga was home to thousands of remote software engineers, startup founders, and designers. But they were all working in silos. A simple post on the local sub-reddit (r/mississauga) asking if there were any local tech meetups struck an absolute goldmine. Hundreds of comments flooded in from folks tired of commuting to downtown Toronto just to talk shop.
The First Gathering
We gathered for the first time in RiverGrove. No structure, no slides, just a group of passionate makers sitting in a circle sharing their projects. That afternoon, we realized we had captured lightning in a bottle. We didn't just have a mailing list—we had a community.
Expanding Our Wings
As the RSVPs grew from 15 to 50, we moved to Touchdown Coworking Space. This period was characterized by incredible sharing of build-logs, career transitions in the AI era, and startup proof-of-concept playbooks. Local engineers and founders stepped up to give deep-dive technical talks, making SaugaTech the go-to destination for West GTA's builders.
A Municipal Partnership
Recognizing the organic growth of the community, Invest Mississauga stepped in to provide institutional support. We moved to our state-of-the-art permanent home base: IDEA Mississauga at Square One. This partnership bridges the gap for local builders, connecting them directly with government grants, academic research, and business advisory services.
Our Core Philosophy
We operate entirely on grassroots energy. We believe that Mississauga, Toronto, the wider GTA, and Canada as a whole have world-class technical talent. Our mission is to keep this talent connected, inspired, and building right here in our local communities.
