SaugaTech Meetup #5 - From Hype to Reality: Actionable Insights for building resilient Tech Careers

September 8, 2025

Wow. We’re still buzzing from the energetic meetup over the weekend.

First off, a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our meetup this weekend—it was our biggest one yet! The room was packed with curiosity, openness, and a shared desire to learn together.

Thank you to all the participants who joined us & leaned in with authenticity—sharing your challenges, stories, and aspirations. The openness in the room turned the conversation into something special: a true community dialogue, not just a Q&A.

A special thanks to our panelists, Aries Youssefian and Dr Shweta Shah, who went beyond a typical panel. By sharing candid stories and real-life examples, they transformed the evening into a mentorship session—one where participants felt safe to open up, ask heartfelt questions, and reflect on their own journeys.

Shoutout to Andy and Muqdas from EQ Bank for dropping by and sharing their views from a recruitment process perspective.

Last but not the least, heartfelt thanks to our venue sponsors, Touchdown Coworking for their continued support to make this gathering possible.

✨ Insights on Navigating Tech Careers in the age of AI

🔮 Hype vs. Reality

  • As Aries reminded us: every new technology takes about a decade to become truly mainstream. By that measure, AI is only three years old.

  • Dr Shweta echoed this with a powerful point: even the world’s biggest GenAI experts only have three years of real-world experience. That means none of us are “behind.” The real goal isn’t to learn it all—it’s to learn what’s relevant to you and what complements your strengths.

  • AI won’t replace everyone—it will reshape work. Much of the current fear comes from AI boosting productivity, which slows rehiring and creates an illusion of job loss.

  • AI tools are accelerators, not substitutes . AI can help generate code, suggest refactors, or automate boilerplate—but it does not replace the need for problem-solving, system design, and architecture judgment.

  • Context matters. In regulated industries like fintech, healthtech etc, the interpretation of rules, ethics, and compliance remains a deeply human skill.

  • Satya Nadella’s views were echoed: “If AI has actual potential, it will be clear when it starts generating measurable business value. The real benchmark is if the world economy growing by 10% through the productivity gains”

🛠️ Skills That Will Continue to Matter

  • Domain expertise → Knowing your field inside out gives you an edge machines can’t replicate. This is applicable across roles Dev, Product, QA, Marketing etc

  • Certifications in specialized areas (Cloud, Cybersecurity, Architecture) continue to carry weight in hiring and credibility.

  • Adjacent skills → If you know Azure and know AI in its context, stretch into AWS; if you’re in dev, add a layer of design or product thinking.

  • Curiosity & experimentation → We’re entering what some called the “Curiosity Economy.” In the AI age, the most valuable professionals will be those who explore, test, and try new things. Experimentation and POCs aren’t just nice-to-haves—they’re survival skills.

  • Andrew Ng’s reminder resonated in the context of product management: “When building becomes easier, the real skill is deciding what to build.”

🚀 What We Can Do as Tech Professionals

  • Play to your strengths → Don’t chase every trend. Build on your unique edge.

  • Don’t seek approval → Confidence and initiative often matter more than waiting for permission. Explore new technologies without getting overwhelmed

  • Think business-first → Technology that doesn’t empower the business is just noise.

  • Early-career strategy → For those just starting out, it may be wise to begin in adjacent business functions (like ops, finance, or customer success) to deeply understand business context before jumping straight into tech. That foundation makes you more relevant—and irreplaceable—over the long run.

  • Sales is still human-powered → No CFO will sign off on a million-dollar purchase order after chatting with an AI. Human credibility, trust-building, and persuasion remain at the heart of big deals.

  • Market yourself authentically → Share what you know, add value in your networks, and let your work speak for itself.

  • Break silos → AI’s impact is only realized when deployed across the enterprise, not in isolated teams.

  • Network across industries → Interacting with peers from different domains helps you continuously learn, broaden your perspective, and spot opportunities you’d miss within your own silo.

  • Commit to daily improvement → Whether 1% more efficient, 30 minutes of learning, or a new experiment—growth compounds.

💡 The Takeaway

The age of AI isn’t about being replaced—it’s about being reshaped. And in this new Curiosity Economy, experimenting, asking questions, networking across domains, and trying new things will be just as important as traditional skills.

Those who lean into adaptability, continuous learning, and authentic collaboration will not just survive but thrive.
