Hi SaugaTech Community,
We are still processing what happened on Saturday afternoon. We witnessed a room full of incredible energy, where you can tell something is clicking. However, before we go there, lets rewind a little bit.
The Beginning: RiverGrove Community Centre, April 2025
Our first meetup was at RiverGrove Community Centre in Apr 2025. About 30 people signed up. At 12:45 pm—15 minutes before the 1 pm start—there were exactly two of us in the room. We looked at each other wondering if anyone would actually show up. Then people started trickling in. By the time we started, almost 20 more curious techies had joined us. That was just the beginning which translated subsequently to 7 in-person meetups and a ~400 people strong community that we have today.
Fast forward to last Saturday (7th Feb) when we felt we truly have built something special here.
February 7th, 2026: What Actually Happened
Over 50 of you showed up at IDEA Square One when it was -25°C with the windchill. We had people not just from Mississauga but from across GTA including Toronto, Oakville, Brampton, Scarborough. We had students mixing with startup founders, early career developers sitting next to people who’ve been shipping code for 15 years.
We actually had to close registration a week before the event because we hit venue capacity. That’s something that none of us in the volunteer group had ever thought could happen.
The session was “Beyond the Prompt: Building Your First AI Agent.” We didn’t dive straight into code. Our facilitators, Bimal and Swati, started with the fundamentals—what AI agents actually are, and more importantly, how they work differently from just prompting a model and getting a response back.
We walked through the building blocks: the reasoning layer that lets agents decide what to do next, the tool-calling mechanisms that let them interact with external systems, the memory systems that help them maintain context across interactions. The stuff that matters when you’re trying to build something that actually works in production.
Then we got into guardrails. We talked about how to set boundaries on what agents can and can’t do, how to handle failures gracefully, and how to keep them from going off the rails when they encounter something unexpected.
After covering the theory, we switched to building. We built an auto dealership sales lead qualification agent together—the kind of thing that actually matters if you’re trying to automate workflows or handle decision trees without hardcoding every scenario. It needed to ask the right questions, understand different types of customer intent, qualify leads based on multiple criteria, and route them appropriately.
Watching the room work through the problem, ask insightful questions, and see the pieces come together over almost 2.5 hours was exactly what we hoped these meetups could be. You could see people connecting the fundamentals we’d covered with the practical implementation.

Building the Tech Scene in Sauga (and beyond)
Saturday was a reminder that Mississauga and the broader western GTA have a tech community that’s growing fast. We’ve got people building AI products, fintech platforms, SaaS tools, and infrastructure companies right here. We’ve got talent coming out of UTM, Sheridan, and local bootcamps. We’ve got experienced folks who’ve worked at Shopify, Amazon, and the banks who are now building their own things or mentoring the next generation.
What we’ve been missing is the connective tissue—the regular gatherings where all of this comes together. That’s what SaugaTech is trying to build. Not just events, but a real ecosystem where people know each other, share what they’re learning, and help each other succeed.
Building community requires people showing up, contributing, and believing that gathering in person still matters in a world where everything can happen over Zoom. Saturday proved that it does matter.
From RiverGrove to IDEA Square One, we’ve come a long way in nine months. But this is still just the beginning. The western GTA tech ecosystem is growing, and we’re building it together—one meetup, one conversation, one connection at a time.
Nine months ago there were two of us in an empty room. Today this comm is going to almost 400 people who have been part of our journey, one way or other.
